Lamborghini Urus SUV Concept: Off Roader

Lamborghini finally takes the wraps off its much rumored SUV during Auto China 2012 in Beijing. The Urus concept points the direction for a production SUV in the Lamborghini line-up.
Lamborghini unveiled the Urus concept in China, a new SUV named after a dead cow.Lamborghini-Urus-Concept-left-side
Following the example of Porsche, which used its Cayenne SUV to create more stable revenue, Lamborghini wants to add an SUV as a third model in its lineup. At the Beijing International auto show, Lamborghini finally revealed what its SUV will look like.
Using the sharp edges of its current design language, the Urus concept presents a very unique look for a vehicle designed to drive offroad. Although about 16 feet in length, similar to the Cayenne, the Urus concept is only about 5.5 feet high, making it more like a raised sedan.

The concept does not appear to be based on any existing Lamborghini, looking like it would use a front engine design. Lamborghini targets 600 horsepower for the output, but does not specify the engine configuration. That high output suggests an engine possibly sourced from Bentley, a sister company under Volkswagen ownership. Bentley came out with its own attempt at an SUV, the EXP 9 F concept at the Geneva auto show this year, but it was a critical flop.
Lamborghini also specifies a dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel-drive for the Urus, both technologies already existing in the company's model line-up. The ride height is also adjustable, but the concept appears to get most of its ground clearance from the 24-inch wheels.
Despite the high power output, Lamborghini says the Urus would get the lowest carbon dioxide emissions in its class due to lightweight construction. A new material called Forged Composite helps keep the weight down.
The name, Urus, comes from a prehistoric ancestor to our modern cattle, and maintains Lamborghini's naming convention related to bulls.
Although there is a lot unrealized about the Urus concept, such as the engine, and many concept touches, such as cameras instead of side view mirrors, Lamborghini is very likely to bring some version of this vehicle to market. A two car model line-up consisting of exotic sport cars leads to very shaky revenue. An SUV, which Lamborghini says would be a car "for everyday use, for the family, for leisure pursuits with friends," gives customers of the brand, who probably already own an SUV from another brand, a new option.

Kids Being ‘Spanked’ By Their Stressed Mom’s

Stressed home makers have turned into harsh mom’s where as working women are involved with their careers , are gentler and more lenient, as are fathers, says a survey by an education group. A survey by the Podar Institute of Education throws up some interesting figures on child-rearing in Bangalore.

Of 906 parents surveyed, 55% hit their children, with mothers spanking them more often than fathers. The figures are telling: only 22% of fathers spank their kids, while 78% mothers are slap-happy. While 4% of these mothers were found to have their own businesses, 39% were into service and 57% were homemakers. Of parents who hit their children, it was found that 28% fathers were businessmen and 72% were into service.

Women appear to take their stress out on their kids by creating a power frame to gain control. A father's absence from home due to travel or long hours at work pushes the burden of parenting on to the mother.

According to the Survey in Bangalore:

Q. Do you raise hand on your child?

  • YES – 78%
  • NO – 22%

Kids in UK Think “Einstein” A TV Star

In London a third of primary school children believe that Albert Einstein is a reality TV star and one-fourth of them think Stephen Hawking is a hairdresser, a new study has found.

However, 68% were correctly able to identify Mark Zuckerberg as the founder of social  networking site Facebook. As many as 29% kids think they have recently seen Einstein, who died in 1955, on reality TV shows like The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent.

Meanwhile, 6% thought X Factor judge Tulisa Contostavlos created penicillin while a million children believe chart-topping rapper Professor Green is a real academic.Furthermore, a confused 35% of five year olds think London mayor Boris Johnson discovered gravity with one in five primary school children believing that England and Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney is a scientist.

Electric light bulb inventor Thomas Edison was credited with creating Facebook by 22% of seven year olds. Happy Halloween Day Celebrations

Halloween also known as All Hallows' Eve, is a yearly holiday observed around the world on October 31, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows.halloween_013_copy
Halloween is one of the oldest holidays with origins going back thousands of years. The holiday we know as Halloween has had many influences from many cultures over the centuries. From the Roman's Pomona Day, to the Celtic festival of Samhain, to the Christian holidays of All Saints and All Souls Days.
Hundreds of years ago in what is now Great Britain and Northern France, lived the Celtics. The Celtics worshipped nature and had many gods, with the sun god as their favorite. It was "he" who commanded their work and their rest times, and who made the earth beautiful and the crops grow.
The Celtics celebrated their New Year on November 1st. It was celebrated every year with a festival and marked the end of the "season of the sun" and the beginning of "the season of darkness and cold."
On the eve before their new year (October 31), it was believed that all the dead people were called together. The dead would take different forms, with the bad spirits taking the form of animals. The most evil taking the form of cats. Halloween_day-010
On October 31st after the crops were all harvested and stored for the long winter the cooking fires in the homes would be extinguished. The Druids, the Celtic priests, would meet in the hilltop in the dark oak forest (oak trees were considered sacred). The Druids would light new fires and offer sacrifices of crops and animals. As they danced around the the fires, the season of the sun passed and the season of darkness would begin.
When the morning arrived the Druids would give an ember from their fires to each family who would then take them home to start new cooking fires. These fires would keep the homes warm and free from evil spirits.
The November 1st festival was named after Samhain and honored both the sun god and Samhain. The festival would last for 3 days. Many people would parade in costumes made from the skins and heads of their animals. This festival would become the first Halloween.
During the first century the Romans invaded Britain. They brought with them many of their festivals and customs. One of these was the festival know as Pomona Day, named for their goddess of fruits and gardens. It was also celebrated around the 1st of November. After hundreds of years of Roman rule the customs of the Celtic's Samhain festival and the Roman Pomona Day mixed becoming 1 major fall holiday.
The next influence came with the spread of the new Christian religion throughout Europe and Britain. In the year 835 AD the Roman Catholic Church would make November 1st a church holiday to honor all the saints. This day was called All Saint's Day, or Hallowmas, or All Hallows. Years later the Church would make November 2nd a holy day. It was called All Souls Day and was to honor the dead. It was celebrated with big bonfires, parades, and people dressing up as saints, angels and devils.3_660_102812103425
But the spread of Christianity did not make people forget their early customs. On the eve of All Hallows, Oct. 31, people continued to celebrate the festival of Samhain and Pomona Day. Over the years the customs from all these holidays mixed. October 31st became known as All Hallow Even, eventually All Hollow's Eve, Hallowe'en, and then - Halloween.
The Halloween we celebrate today includes all of these influences, Pomona Day's apples, nuts, and harvest, the Festival of Sanhain's black cats, magic, evil spirits and death, and the ghosts, skeletons and skulls from All Saint's Day and All Soul's Day.

Feno Latop - A Foldable OLED Screen Laptop

58879_553327144684260_1425309656_nA laptop computer is a personal computer for mobile use.A laptop has most of the same components as a desktop computer, including a display, a keyboard, a pointing device such as a touchpad(also known as a track pad) and/or a pointing stick, and speakers into a single unit.

A laptop is powered by mains electricity via an AC adapter, and can be used away from an outlet using a rechargeable battery.Laptops are also sometimes called notebook computers, notebooks or net books.

Niels van Hoof’s Feno laptop concept looks pretty sweet, since it looks like it’s half the size of a Mac Book Air, but has got the same size screen as the Mac Book Pro 17, thanks to a flexible OLED display.

The sleek curves and silver aluminum casing are impressive, and it reminds a lot of Mac Books, but the best thing would be the folding screen. The design assumes that a flexible OLED screen could be built with no seam where the top two pieces hinge. One thing that I don’t think we’ll need is the pop-out mouse. I’d rather have a Kinect-like sensor could just track your movements and translate them into actions, or just project a virtual track pad on the side instead.

Another thing is the optical drive. We barely use and there will be Mac Book  Pro models next year which will completely remove it. It is fine with that, but Hoof’s concept still has one.

How to be a good parent

One of the nicest things about being a parent is that regardless of the circumstances of your own childhood, the moment you go from being ‘a girl or guy’ to being a parent, you suddenly ‘get it.’ That amazing feeling of exactly what it’s like to love something more than anything.

Here are top ten tips on how to be a good parent…

1. Be involved in your child's life.

2. Establish and set rules.

3. Avoid harsh discipline.

4. Explain your rules and decisions.

5. Treat your child with respect.

6. Help them feel safe.

7. Do Something Familiar.

8. Read together.

9. Find out one important thing about your child’s day.

10. Don’t worry about the previous nine items.

Just when you think you’re doing ok as a parent, then along comes an article like this one to make you feel like you are not doing the job right!? Of course, that’s not the point. All the goals we’ve listed are worth aiming for, but no one will ever accomplish all of them, every day. So don’t beat yourself up trying to do the impossible. If expectations seem to high, be realistic about it and try not to judge yourself against other parents… remember they are probably feeling like you do as well.

A good way to look at how to become a good parent, is to try and enjoy the time you have with your little ones. Take a step back, take a breath, look at these little people you have created and spend time with them. It’s these moments with your children that make them feel loved. Leave the washing for another few minutes, have that chat with a friend on the phone a bit later and take those extra moments to spend with your children.

Your outfits reveal your personality

What women wear can give a powerful insight into who they are too, a new study has revealed. Jennifer Baumgartner, a clinical psychologist, has claimed that one’s wardrobe decisions tell others about their secret desires.
In her book, the 34-year-old, who is also a wardrobe consultant, described the mistakes women typically make when buying clothes. Many fall into the trap of only buying designer labels, wearing office clothes all the time or simply buying too much. Another typical problem is getting stuck in a style rut, defined as having not changed your look for the past five years.
Cleavage-exposing clothes, such as those favoured by actor Christina Hendricks, are about feeling powerful and in control. Women who button up their clothes are actually telling their boss that “femininity means weakness, not power”. While high heels can make women appear less intelligent, it inspires confidence by making the wearer as tall as their male colleagues at the same time. If you often find yourself in jeans and trainers with unkempt hair, beware. You may be “overly identifying with motherhood and suppressing other parts of yourself out of guilt or exhaustion”. A young girl choosing a short skirt could be an attention seeker, while an older woman doing the same is having difficulty accepting that she is a grownup.
“All of our behaviours, from the food we eat to the men we date, are motivated by internal factors. Why is it any different with the clothes we buy and the way we buy them? All you need to do is note the styles in your wardrobe to identify the patterns. It is then that you can make real change, and find a wardrobe to match the new and improved you,”

Tattoo Care And Tips

Getting inked may be painful, but all that can go to naught if you are unable to ensure that your tattoo heals properly. Its a few days of extra care and attention, but the time invested will go a long way in ensuring that your tattoo remains the same way for a long time. Here’s a basic checklist of what you need to keep in mind when it comes to post tattoo care for your skin.

  • Do not scratch if your tattoo itches. It is important to let the skin form a scab, which falls off on its own in due course. If you peel it off by force, you run the risk of having the ink leak out.
  • Do not expose your tattoo to direct sunlight.
  • Avoid swimming pools, especially public ones.
  • Also avoid hot tubs and hot showers.
  • Avoid pouring water on your tattoo for at least 10 days. Wash your hands, put a few drops of cold water over your tattoo to wet the surface, pat it dry lightly with a clean tissue and apply Vaseline over the entire surface of the tattoo.
  • Do not apply sunscreen lotion on the tattoo.
  • It takes the skin about three-four days to form the scab, and then it takes anywhere between seven-10 days for the scab to come off, though in some cases, it can take up to a fortnight.
  • Once the scab falls, the skin will still have a shiny dry layer which is actually the skin that is healing. Take care of that too.

Tackling the Muffin Top

After bingeing out and being lazy, I now have a muffin belly. What fitness regime and diet should I follow?
A: Abdominal fat is the most common problem related to weight gain and also the most difficult to get rid of. A 'muffin belly' may not only look ugly but is also associated with problems like type 2 diabetes and heart ailments. Abdominal weight gain is largely due to a high-calorie diet, lack of exercise, and high stress levels.
One has to attack the fat through a three-dimensional plan which includes nutrition, cardio and abdominal exercise.

bellyworkout

Have smaller meals: Never skip a meal (especially not breakfast); eat smaller portions five to six times a day. Your diet should have low carbs, low fat and no starch and sugar. Avoid canned juices, aerated drinks and alcohol. Drink at least two to three litres of water daily.
Shed calories with cardio:
Hydrate well before, during and after the cardio workout. Warm up before the exercise and cool down after.Cardio exercises like jogging, swimming, aerobics or dancing for up to an hour a day will help you burn excess calories.Doing crunches while lying on a mat or using a stability ball for 15-20 minutes a day helps tone the abdominal muscles. While the focus is on your abs, do not neglect your lower back. Some back-strengthening exercises are required as well to balance the muscular strength in and around the trunk area. Do these exercises under supervision as they need to be correctly executed.

How to prevent yourself from getting a tan

The harmful UV rays of the scorching sun can damage your skin. While some can pull off that sexy tanned look, others detest that bronze tinge in their complexion. Here are some ways to avoid getting a tan:
• Always keep a sunblock/sun-screen lotion handy and keep applying it at regular intervals throughout the day. This layer of lotion will protect skin from getting damaged.
• Use homemade face packs like ubtan (a mixture of besan and haldi). This nourishes the skin, leaving it healthy and rejuvenated after it’s drained in the sun.
• Scrub your face at least twice a week to get rid of that dead skin. This will remove the tan as well.

How To Clean Stuffed Toys

Stuffed animals can take a lot of abuse, but can also breed bacteria and nastiness. keep them looking (and smelling!) their best with the instructions below. You may need to perform only the first couple steps if your toy is only lightly soiled. Otherwise, consider performing all five steps.
What You’ll Need

    soft toys
  • Soft cloth
  • Vacuum cleaner or lint roller (optional)
  • Brush
  • Laundry detergent
  • Washing machine
  • Zippered pillowcase
  • Baking soda (optional)

  • Give those Stuffed Animals a Bath
    • Surface clean first to remove dust - If you use a vacuum, do not use the short- or long-pile adjustment.
    • Be careful not to vacuum up any accessories that may be attached to the toy.
    • Check for spots and stains - Mix 3-tbsp. dish soap with 1/4-tsp. ammonia and 3/4-c. water. Whisk the solution and apply only the froth to the affected areas. Wipe off with a damp cloth.
    • Mix 1/4-c. water with 1/2-c. rubbing alcohol and 1/2-tsp. dish soap. Whisk the solution and apply only the forth to the affected areas. Wipe off with a damp cloth.
    • Machine wash - Do not washing old or delicate toys in the washing machine. To remove odor, you can try placing them in a paper bag with some baking soda. Shake the bag until the toy is covered and let sit 30 minutes.
    • You may then brush the baking soda off with a towel.
    • Do not place very large toys (over 18 in.) in the washing machine.
    • Do not wash any toys that are stuffed with fiberfill or foam beads, stuffed very densely, or contains paper or plastic stiffeners or joints.
    • Remove toys from the washing machine, brush, and air dry.
    • Maintain your toys and keep them looking new

  • Eating Healthy Breakfast

While any breakfast may be better than no breakfast, there are some foods you might want to avoid because they're high in added sugars, sodium, saturated fats and calories. Cut back on sugary breakfast cereals (over 5.0 grams per serving), high-calorie pastries, and meats like bacon and sausage that are high in saturated fat and sodium.

    healthy breakfast
Breakfast should include a healthy source of protein and plenty of fibre; the combination will help satisfy your hunger and will keep you feeling full until lunch time. The protein can come from low-fat meat, low-fat dairy products, or nuts and nut butters. Eggs are also a good source of protein. They're also high in saturated fats, but one egg only has about 75 calories and they're quite satiating so it can help keep the hunger pangs away. High-fibre foods include fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

A healthy breakfast doesn't need to be extravagant or take a long time to prepare. Try an easier breakfast -- something simple like a hard boiled egg, a piece of 100-percent whole grain toast along with a cup of 100-percent fruit juice. And there's nothing wrong with a bowl of cold whole-grain cereal with berries and low-fat milk (remember to check the cereal label for grams of sugar). You can also purchase breakfast bars made from different types of cereal, but remember to read the label because many of these bars are high in sugar.
If you really don't like to eat breakfast first thing in the morning, you can split it up into two smaller meals. Eat a hard boiled egg, or a small cup of yogurt at home before you leave for work, then about an hour or two later, take a break from work and snack on an apple and a handful of healthy nuts like pecans or walnuts.

    Don’t Skip Breakfast

Research tidies indicate that children who eat breakfast perform better on cognitive tests and in school. Maybe it works that way for adults too since our brains need fuel to work properly. If that's the case, skipping breakfast may be a bad idea.
    healthy breakfast
Skipping breakfast is a common strategy for people who are trying to lose weight, but unfortunately, it's usually not a successful strategy. Your body (or more likely, your brain) expects to be refuelled a few times each day. When you don't eat breakfast you may feel so hungry by lunch time that you eat more foods than you normally would, which cancels out the calories you cut by skipping breakfast. You may also be tempted to choose foods that are not the healthiest choices when you feel like you're starving.
For many people, eating breakfast may is an important part of a weight loss diet. Research studies tell us that people who eat breakfast are more likely to maintain a healthy weight. Some experts believe eating breakfast keeps your metabolism running higher because skipping meals causes the body to kick into 'starvation' mode. This sounds impressive, but it really isn't what happens -- it takes three or for days of eating nothing before the body starts gearing down your metabolism. It's more likely that people who regularly eat breakfast also make good dietary choices the rest of the day.

    Skin Care Tips

First on the list of our beauty tips for girls are some skin care essential for you to enjoy!
(Tissue Test): One of the most important aspects of taking care of your skin involves knowing exactly what skin type you have. The five basic skin types are sensitive, normal, oily, combination and dry. When you're trying to diagnose your skin type, do a simple test in the morning with a tissue after waking up. This is the easiest way to tell which of the five basic skin types you have. To perform the test, just unfold the tissue, and lay it so that the tissue covers your face. Then press it onto your skin, and remove the tissue to see what it reveals. Use these descriptions to find your skin type in order to take proper care of yourself.
(Sensitive Skin): Your tissue will have little-to-no oil left over from your skin. Sensitive skin can become a challenge to treat since it often feels tight and dry with reddish-scaly areas. In addition to this, sensitive skin can itch and tingle with spotty breakouts. If your skin becomes inflamed or irritated easily, then you probably have sensitive skin.

    skin care
Sensitive Skin Care Tips: Avoid facial exfoliants and cleansers with sand or peach pits to avoid worsening your red skin; instead, use cleansers made with castile soap because it is soothing and gentle on your skin. Do not use facial cleansers that contain large amounts of benzoyl peroxide, alpha-hydroxy-acid (AHA) and/or beta-hydroxy-acid (BHA) since these can irritate acne further. Unfortunately, it can be hard to find a facial cleanser that treats sensitive skin in drugstores because these are the most common ingredients in many cleansers and exfoliants on the market.
(Normal Skin): The tissue will have no oil left over from your face, and your skin will feel plump, glowy and elastic. Lucky for you, this skin type is the easiest to treat and manage because it continues to have healthy circulation and a clear complexion - even with little-to-no care involved. Those lucky enough to have the normal skin type will continue to have clear skin as they age.
Normal Skin Care Tips: The best thing to do if you have normal skin is to wash it every day - morning and night - with gentle soap so you don't irritate the balance that your skin already has. Use a toner if you like, and of course apply a moisturizer daily.
(Oily Skin): If your tissue has traces of oil from where your nose, forehead and cheeks were, then you likely have oily skin. Oily skin is a problem for a lot of girls since it causes skin to look shiny, coarse, thick, greasy, and often leads to uncontrollable breakouts.
Oily Skin Care Tips: To keep your skin looking young and supple, while also keeping it from wrinkling as you get older, use proper facial washes designed to treat oily skin. You won't have any trouble finding treatments for oily skin because there are a variety of products to choose from. But don't use the same soap you use on your body since it will dry your skin out, and leave you with unwanted pimples! Use an exfoliating scrub once or twice a week to combat breakouts.
(Combination Skin): If your tissue has oil on the areas reflecting your nose and forehead only, then your skin type is combination. You are amongst most women, who have a combination of dry and oily skin, and have to use different kinds of care for each zone of their face.

Combination Skin Care Tips: Your dry zones are typically your cheek and eye areas, and these won’t need much attention until the age of 30 or older. The other areas of your face are known as oil zones, and they require daily cleansing and weekly exfoliating with a product designed for oily skin.
(Dry Skin): Girls with dry skin will have a clear tissue, but also skin that feels dry, tight, and flaky once the tissue has been removed. Dry skin is problematic because it is known to age and develop wrinkles faster than oily and combination skin.

Dry Skin Care Tips: You can easily fight off wrinkles and aging by developing healthy skin care habits that involve plenty of moisturizers containing hypoallergenic ingredients. Use lukewarm water to cleanse with since hot water irritates skin. In the winter, these tips are especially important to keep in mind!

For all children. Even if you do not traditionally celebrate Ugadi. What better way for kids to understand and enjoy the myriad flavours and festivals of India.
    • Its the perfect excuse to do some spring cleaning and decorating! Involve the kids as well. Ask them to weed out toys, books and material they do not need. There is no dearth of things to do with these extras - you can donate them to needy kids, give to friends who might need, perhaps even offload / sell to the Parent tree community. With the little pocket money, your child can buy something new or even donate to some children’s organization.
    • Visit a needy children’s organization (schools, orphanages etc.) with your children, and some goodies. What joy for these kids! You might be surprised what a fun experience this might be for your kids as well. Also this can be a profound lesson in empathy, philanthropy and gratefulness for your child.
    • Talk to kids about Ugadi. You will be surprised how much they can absorb and imbibe. Tell them about the mixture of neem leaves and jaggery and about life being bitter sweet. it is hands on experience about life’s fundamental philosophies. What about making this mixture? Life’s truths will surely hit hard when they taste this. A reminder for all times.
    ugadi

    How is Ugadi celebrated?

Ugadi day is heralded by the early morning oil bath ritual - a holistic cleansing and rejuvenation. This is followed by eating a special mixture of neem leaves for bitterness, jaggery for sweetness, tamarind / mango for sourness, salt for saltiness etc. Basically it is a very tangible reminder of the way life is - bitter sweet with its ups and downs - and that all these flavours of life should be accepted with calm and savoured. People wear nice new clothes and get together with extended families and of course no festival is complete without great food. It is also a time for cleaning the house, doing good deeds and donating to the poor and the needy.

    Jewellery Sparkles Brighter

The budget has added more sheen to your jewellery shopping. It has reduced value added tax (VAT) on gold, precious and
    jwellery
semi-precious stones from 2% to 1%. So, if you are buying a gold ring weighing 10gm at Rs 28,000 (at current prices), you'll now pay Rs 280 as VAT instead of Rs 560. "The rolling back of VAT to 1% is in the true spirit of bringing about uniformity in the tax structure. With this move, Karnataka will be on a par with its neighbours in VAT. This will reboot manufacturing, wholesaling and jewellery distribution in the state, all of which were lying low for the past two years," said Vinod Hayagriv, MD, C Krishniah Chetty & Sons. Higher VAT in Karnataka had led to flight of business and artisans to neighbouring states with lower VAT. "The announcement will arrest this exodus and will lead to increased jewellery trade in the state, resulting in more opportunities for artisans and jewellers," said Rajesh Mehta, chairman, Rajesh Exports. The trade in Karnataka contributed over Rs 150 crore as VAT to the state exchequer in 2011-12.
So this article is very useful for ladies who are very fascinated to jewellery. Enjoy your shopping.

    Dealing With Young Children Tips

    • Language is a powerful tool and there are a bunch of tactics you need to learn to create the outcomes you want. Here’s a specific tip: Use positive language instead of negative language.
    • If you want to have any chance at all of influencing your child’s behaviour, you MUST have rapport first. Rapport simply means having an emotional connection to another person.

    toddlers

    • You can learn LOTS of ways to create this crucial emotional bridge before you change a child’s behaviour.
    • We tend to overuse the word “No” when we talk to our kids. You remember the story of the boy who cried wolf, right? The little shepherd boy was bored while watching the sheep so he decided to cry wolf and make the villagers come running. Before long, they stopped responding to his false cries. When a parent cries “No” at every little thing, kids stop listening. The parent’s cries fade into the background.
    • You can have multiple ways to get what you want without screaming “NO” at your child – and it simply works better!
    • Behaviour is driven by emotion, not Logic. This is fundamental to everything.
    • Behaviour, for any person of any age, is determined by their emotional state.
    • People act from their emotions, and they later justify their actions with logic.
    • But small kids don’t have the ability to use logic, so they act purely from emotion.

    Fighting Indoor Allergies–Tips

Allergic reactions occur when your immune system overreacts to normally harmless substances, such as dust mites, pet dander, mold and cockroach droppings. Most people think allergies  only act up in the spring, but the winter can be just as difficult because it's harder to avoid allergens when you're stuck indoors.
Winter Allergies - What Can We Do About Them?
Mostly we think of spring as the Allergy Season. Often we can see clouds of pollen and blossom blowing in the wind. So it comes as a shock to learn that many allergy sufferers have an awful time in the winter.
    • Allergies can be triggered by many different things; pollen from flowers and trees are often responsible but for the Winter Allergy sufferer household mould is often to blame. After all in the winter we have the windows and doors sealed to prevent cold wind and rain chilling us. But the result of sealing the house is the rise of humidity which is exactly what mould needs to grow.
    • Doctors have advised that keeping the humidity below 35% helps not just to inhibit mould but dust mites too.
    • The common allergens in winter are deemed to be perennial -- that is, animal dander in the home or on other people's clothing, house dust mites that grow to large numbers in your mattress and pillow, and mould. Cockroach and mouse dander may also play a role.
    • If allergy skin tests are negative, it's possible that a seasonal allergen or a virus produced an initial inflammation that has now become self-sustaining and persistent.
    • Allergies can trigger or worsen asthma and other respiratory illnesses especially in the winter when families spend more time indoors, which increases their exposure to irritants like dust mites, pet dander, smoke, household sprays and chemicals, and gas fumes - any and all of which can make their lives miserable.
For treatment of winter allergy and asthma, the best approach is prevention. The following measures are recommended:
    • Keep animals outdoor if possible and wash them once a week.
    • Keep the house dust-free as much as possible. Vacuum the carpet once or twice a week. A good vacuum cleaner with HEPA-FILTER is
      very beneficial.
    • The curtains and shades must be free of dust. No feather pillows and plush toys should be removed from children's bedroom.

Day Care: Choosing a Good Center

What should I look for in a day care center?
Whether you are considering a commercial day care center or one in someone's home, you should check it out carefully. Ask questions of the staff. Talk to parents of other children at the day care center. Look over the center carefully. This hand-out gives you a list of questions to get started.
Ask about the child to staff ratio.

    • How many children are there for each staff member? The fewer children each staff member is responsible for, the better. The American Academy of Paediatrics recommends a ratio of one staff person for 3 to 5 small children and one staff member for 7 to 10 older children.
    • Are the younger and older children separated? Separating the older and younger children helps reduce the number of infections that are passed around.

    Ask about the center's policies.

    • What are the center's policies on discipline and other important issues?
    • Are the policies in writing? Ask for a copy.
    • Ask how the center cares for sick children.

    How is medicine given?

    • How are parents told about illness among the children?
    • When must children stay home because of illness?
    • Does the center have a "sick room" for children with minor illnesses?
    • Is there a nurse or doctor to help with medical care?
    • Are children required to have vaccinations before coming to day care?
    • Is a physical exam required before admission?
    • Does the day care center keep a record of health-related problems, such as illnesses, injuries and accidents, for each child?

    Ask about staff training.

    • What are the training requirements for staff members?
    • Are all staff members certified in basic first aid?
    • Are all staff members trained in child development?
    • Are all staff members trained in identification of abused children?
    • Are all staff members trained in preventing illness and injury?
    • Does the center have rules about careful and frequent hand-washing? This is key to reduce the spread of illness among the children. All staff members must wash their hands each time they diaper a child and before fixing meals or snacks.
    • Check building and playground safety.
    • Are poison control phone numbers and ambulance phone numbers clearly posted?
    • Does the playground have impact-absorbing surfaces, such as wood chips, under the swings and slides?

Are young children able to get to high places?

    • Are the children protected from strangers?
    • Are fire drills held at least every month?
    • Are there smoke alarms throughout the building?
    • Does the center use space heaters? If so, are they being used properly?
    • Are safety gates used in areas for small children?
    • Are electric outlets covered?
    • Are sharp corners of furniture covered?
    • Are the toys kept clean? Washable toys should be washed every day with a disinfectant cleaner, such as Lysol or a solution of water and bleach.
    • Does the day care staff regularly clean all surfaces with disinfectant?

What can I do to keep day care safe for my child?

    • Visit with the staff at the day care center. Go to meetings for family members and learn about the concerns of staff and other parents.
    • Suggest educational programs for parents and staff members. Helpful topics include child development, first aid, dental care, skin cancer prevention, general safety and recognizing abuse.
    • Help with cleaning and repairs at the day care center. Many centers appreciate parents helping out as playground supervisors.
    • Ask your child every day about what happened at day care.

What are some signs that would tell me if there are problems?

    • The staff fails to answer your questions and address your concerns.
    • There is no way for parents to be involved in the day care practices.
    • Your child tells you about problems or is not happy with his or her day care experience.
    • Unexplained accidents happen more than once.
    • The staff changes often.
    • The management can't offer you a written copy of the day care policies.
    • Other parents tell you about problems or concerns with the day care center.
