JEGGINGS and leggings are out of the high-style wardrobe this season. Kareena Kapoor’s sharara in Agent Vinod, as she sings, Dil mera muft ka, heralds a new beginning for what women are going to go clubbing in.
THE CULOTTE
Recognise it by I Its wide cropped shape. The culotte was renewed in fluid silk by Calvin Klein and in a stiffer cotton version by Rag & Bone. Celine paired it with a fitted blazer. Now, the culotte is far from drab; billowing in neon brights. “The humble culotte will elevate its status this summer,” says London College of Fashion graduate and designer Elisha W.
It has a history I Historically, culottes referred to the knee-breeches commonly worn by gentlemen of the European upper-classes during the late Middle Ages through the early 19th century. It hangs like a skirt, but is actually a pant. During the Victorian era, long split skirts were developed for horseback riding.
Wear it with I “For the warm Indian summer, pair it with a sleeveless blouse clinched at the waist with a belt. For a semi-formal look, wear it with a flowing tunic. It has a light, breezy, feminine feel to it,” says Elisha.
Wear it to I They are perfect for a dinner or an evening of cocktails.

THE DISCO PANT
Recognise it by: The fit that makes it hug your body like a leech. “This season, it better be gold and bold,” says designer Raakesh Agarvwal. The original disco pant was hip hugging, slightly bell-bottomed, but fitted tightly around the hips and thighs. Delhi designer Suneet Varma says, “It’s to show off your perfect body to the hilt.”
It has a history I Worn by men at retro theme parties, this style became a popular fashion statement in the late 1960s. With the popularisation of disco, a drastic change occurred in mainstream fashion. Men began to wear stylish three-piece suits, wide-legged disco pants and high-rise waistcoats. The zippered jumpsuit was popular with both, men and women.
Wear it with I A low-neck blouse in sheer fabric. “It’s a very Studio 54 look. For (Delhi restaurateur) Shiv Karan’s bachelor party, I’m getting the guys and ladies to wear the style in gold,” says the designer. Wear it to: It’s an after-sundown garment. “Wear it for a bachelorette party or a night at the club. Even size 14 aunties want to wear it to cocktail dos hosted by friends,” says Agarvwal.
THE SHARARA PANT
Recognise it by I The flair. Kareena Kapoor has given a new twist to the old sharara in Agent Vinod. Says designer Puja Nayyar, “The new version is contemporary, overly-flared, bouncy and high-waisted. It’s the best evening wear option this summer.” It has a history I Originally, it was an avatar of the lehenga, worn mostly by women from the Muslim community. The trend kicked off in the subcontinent during the Mughal rule. Veteran actress Meena Kumari made shararas fashionable in Pakeezah, a 1972 film about a Lucknow tawaif. Wear it with I Something cropped that ends at the waist, preferably a jacket. “The sharara has transformed. It has a more high-fashion Prada and Gucci kind of appeal,” says Nayyar. Wear it to I High fashion cocktail parties or a night of clubbing.
